Applying for a student visa

You will be required by the Australian authorities to bring or send certain documents with your Student Visa Application. You will need to make sure that the documentation provided is properly copied and translated.

Prior to lodging your visa our office will provide you with a document checklist to make sure that you provide what is required by the Australian Authorities. You must remember it is your responsibility to provide the correct documentation and translation - a mistake on your part will jeopardize your Application.

Certified Copies

If an original copy is not provided, you may provide a certified or notarized copy. A certified or notarized copy is a copy that has been sighted and stamped by a person or individual recognized by the law in your country to carry out such functions.

In Australia, copies may be certified by:
> Justice of the Peace
> Commissioner for Declarations
> Person before whom a statutory declaration may be made under the Statutory Declarations Act 1959
Translations

All documents not in the English Language must be given an English translation. If you are applying in Australia, the translation provided must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).

Minimum documents needed are as follows:

If you are making an Application for a Student Visa then you need to provide:
> Form 157A, Application for a student (temporary) visa
> Your passport
> Your current Confirmation of Enrolment - certificate or letter or offer
> Evidence of your health insurance
> Evidence that you can pay your course fees
> Evidence that you have enough money to support money to support your stay in Australia, and
> Your health examination results
> You may be required to provide the results of an English test or educational or other documents.
Applying for your dependants to join you in Australia
> Form 919, Student dependant nomination,
> Form 157A, Application for a student (temporary) visa,
> An original letter from the education provider stating:

           > The course you are studying
           > The duration of the course and your expected completion date, and
           > If you are satisfying course requirements

> Evidence that you have enough money to support your dependants in Australia
> Evidence of your relationship with your dependants
> Evidence of school enrollment of your school-aged dependants
> Evidence of health insurance for each dependent
A current student visa holder and re-applying:
> A sample of your pay slips so that the officer can be satisfied you have not breached your work conditions,
> Your academic transcripts and previous record of attendance to show that you satisfied your course    requirements, and
> Evidence that you meet all requirements for making a student application.
Student Visa Requirements - Details

Financial
> You will need to show that you have enough money to pay for your living expenses, education costs and travel    for the duration of your studies,
> You will need to show that you have enough money for you, your spouse and all of your children aged less than    18 years, whether or not they will be coming to Australia with you.
Minimum financial requirements

You should have enough money to pay:
> For your course fees,
> Living costs for you, your spouse, and your children aged under 18 years,
> School fees and costs for your children between 5 and 18 years
> Your travel costs to and from Australia (including any accompanying family members).
Annual living cost should be calculated carefully but in approximate terms are:
> $12,000 for you (the main student visa applicant),
> $4,200 for your spouse,
> $2,400 for your first child
> $1,800 for each extra child
Annual school fees are fixed at approximately $8,000 for each child aged between 5 and 18 years.

Exceptions to minimum financial requirements are available and you should consult us for further details.

Proof of financial requirements

If you state that you have access to sufficient funds to meet the minimum financial requirements in the student visa application form. You need to:
> Show that you have access to minimum financial requirements for the first 12 months of your stay in Australia
> Declare that you have access to minimum financial requirements for the remainder of your stay in Australia.

   Note: Although non-cash assets are not directly acceptable, it is possible to either:

           > Liquidate the assets prior to applying for a student visa, depositing the money you receive in a bank, or
           > Use the assets as collateral for loan from a financial institution.

> Show that you access to the minimum financial requirements from an acceptable source for the first 24 months    of your stay in Australia, and
> Declare that you have access to minimum financial requirements for the remainder of your stay in Australia.
> Show that you have access to the minimum financial requirements from an acceptable source for the first 36    months of your stay in Australia, and
> Declare that you have access to the minimum financial requirements for the remainder of your stay in Australia.
The moneys that will support you & your family members can come from:
> A money deposit with a financial institution held by you or an individual providing support to you for at least 3    consecutive months immediately before the date of your visa application,
> A loan from a financial institution issued to you or to an individual providing support to you,
> A loan from the government of your home country,
> Your proposed e3ducation provider,
> The Commonwealth of Australia or an Australian State or Territory
> The government of a foreign country
> A corporation,
> An organization gazetted by the minister
> A multilateral agency
> A money deposit with a financial institution that has been held for at least 6 consecutive months immediately    before the date of your visa application by:

           > You,
           > Your spouse,
           > Your brother or sister
           > Your parents,
           > Your grandparents,
           > Your aunt or uncle (only if they are usually resident in Australia and either a citizen/permanent resident               of Australia or an eligible New Zealand citizen),

> A loan from a financial institution to (and in the name of):

           > You,
           > Your spouse,
           > Your brother or sister
           > Your parents,
           > Your grandparents,
           > Your aunt or uncle (only if they are usually resident in Australia and either a citizen/permanent resident               of Australia or an eligible New Zealand citizen),
           > Your proposed e3ducation provider,
           > The Commonwealth of Australia or an Australian State or Territory
           > The government of a foreign country
           > A corporation,
           > An organization gazetted by the minister
           > A multilateral agency
Financial support from a corporation is acceptable only if that corporation conducts commercial activities outside the country in which it is based and only if it currently employs you in a role that is directly relevant to your main course.

Exception: Financial support from a corporation is not acceptable for subclass 570 - ELICOS
